The Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon walk follows the rim of one of the most dramatic canyons in South Iceland. The out-and-back path is 2.5 km, takes about 45 minutes and has around 80 m of ascent, with a highest point of about 140 m. It is a short, easy walk on a clear path with several viewpoints looking down into the twisting gorge.
The canyon is about 2 km long and up to around 100 m deep, carved by the Fjaðrá river through soft rock. Its moss-covered walls and winding shape make it extremely photogenic, and it became famous after appearing in a music video. Because of heavy visitor numbers, the area is fragile and has been closed at times to protect vegetation, so check before you go.

The route
Car park along the rim
From the car park the path climbs gently along the eastern rim of the canyon. Several viewpoints show the river winding far below between steep, moss-covered walls. Stay behind barriers and on the marked path, since trampled moss here takes many years to recover and the edges are undercut in places.
To the upper viewpoint and back
The path continues gently uphill to a viewing platform near the upper end of the canyon, which gives the classic view down the length of the gorge. The ground beyond is fragile, so do not continue past the end of the path. Return the same way to the car park.
Getting to the trailhead
Fjaðrárgljúfur is reached by Route 206, a short road off Route 1 just west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. There is a car park at the canyon, where a parking fee is charged. It is about four hours' drive from Reykjavík, so most people visit while travelling along the south coast.
Where to stay
Kirkjubæjarklaustur, about 10 minutes away, has hotels, guesthouses, a campsite and a swimming pool. Farm stays and guesthouses are scattered along Route 1 in the area, and it pairs well with a trip to Laki.
Best time to hike
Fjaðrárgljúfur can be visited year-round, but the path may be closed during spring thaw to protect the vegetation. Summer brings the greenest moss. In winter, ice can make the path slippery.
Safety
The canyon edges are steep and unfenced in places; stay behind barriers and on marked paths. Paths can be muddy and slippery. Follow closure signs, which protect fragile ground. In an emergency call 112, and check SafeTravel.is for weather warnings.
