The Glanni and Paradísarlaut loop is a short, easy walk near Bifröst in West Iceland, combining a lively waterfall with a hidden hollow in the lava. The measured route is a 1.5 km loop that takes about 20 minutes and is essentially flat. It is ideal for families, for a break on a road trip along Route 1, or for anyone who wants a gentle stroll rather than a hike.
Glanni is a broad set of falls and rapids where the Norðurá river pours over a lip of lava, and in summer you may see salmon trying to leap them. Paradísarlaut, a short distance away, is a sheltered dip in the moss- and birch-covered Grábrókarhraun lava field, holding a small pond of very clear water. The two are linked by well-trodden paths with viewing platforms.
Highlights
- The Glanni falls on the Norðurá river
- Paradísarlaut, a sheltered hollow with a clear pond
- Birch scrub and moss on an old lava field
- Flat, easy walking suitable for all ages
The route
Car park to Glanni
From the parking area, follow the signed path through low birch woodland to the viewing platform over Glanni. The river splits around lava ledges and drops in several channels. Stay behind the railings, as the rock near the water is slippery and the current is strong.
Paradísarlaut and back
Continue on the loop path into the lava field to Paradísarlaut, where steps lead down to the edge of the clear pool. It is a quiet, sheltered spot, a good contrast to the noise of the falls. The path then curves back to the car park. Stay on the paths, as the moss is fragile.
Getting to the trailhead
The walk starts from a signposted turn off Route 1 close to Bifröst in Norðurárdalur, a short distance from Grábrók crater and roughly an hour and a half's drive from Reykjavík. There is a car park at the trailhead. A car is the practical option; buses along Route 1 pass the area but stops may not be convenient.
Where to stay
Bifröst has a hotel, and there are cabins, guesthouses and summer houses in the lava-field woodland around Hreðavatn. Borgarnes, about half an hour south, has the widest range of accommodation, restaurants and shops.
Best time to hike
The loop can be walked year round. Summer is best for green birch and moss, and for the chance of seeing salmon at the falls. Autumn colours in September are lovely. In winter, paths and steps may be icy and the days are short.
Safety
A low-risk walk, but keep children close near the falls: the rock is wet and slippery and the river is fast and cold. Do not climb over railings. Steps at Paradísarlaut can be icy in winter. Stay on paths to protect the moss. In an emergency call 112, and see SafeTravel.is for weather and travel information.
