The Helgafell hike in Hafnarfjörður is one of the most popular short mountain walks near Reykjavík, Iceland. The out-and-back route is 6.5 km, takes 2–2.5 hours and involves about 250 m of ascent, reaching a highest point of around 340 m. It starts at Kaldársel, on the edge of the lava fields south-east of Hafnarfjörður, and climbs a compact mountain of rough tuff and rock.

The approach crosses moss and lava, and the final climb is steep, with some light scrambling on rocky ground in places. From the top you see across the Reykjanes lava fields, the Bláfjöll mountains and back towards the capital. Locals walk it year-round, which makes it a good choice for an easy-to-reach outing, but in winter the rock can be icy and the path harder.

Highlights

  • Quick escape from Reykjavík
  • Views over lava fields and the capital area
  • Fun, rocky final climb
  • Hikeable year-round with care

The route

Kaldársel to the base

From the Kaldársel parking area the path crosses a flat lava plain with patches of moss and grass. It is easy walking and well trodden. Helgafell rises ahead, and you can see the path winding up its flank before you reach the foot of the mountain.

Up the rocky flank to the top

The climb steepens over rough rock and gravel, with some sections where using your hands helps. The summit is broad and rocky, with a small cairn and wide views. Return the same way, taking care on the steep and sometimes slippery descent.

Getting to the trailhead

The trail starts at Kaldársel, a short drive south-east from Hafnarfjörður along a road leading out of town towards the lava fields. There is a car park at the trailhead, which can fill on sunny weekends. Hafnarfjörður is about 15 minutes' drive from central Reykjavík.

Where to stay

Helgafell is an easy half-day outing from Reykjavík or Hafnarfjörður, both of which have plenty of accommodation, cafés, restaurants and geothermal swimming pools for afterwards. There is no accommodation or facilities at the trailhead itself.

Best time to hike

Helgafell can be hiked year-round. May to October gives the best conditions and long days. In winter the path can be icy and daylight short, so bring microspikes and start in good time, or choose a milder day.

Safety

The rocky upper section is steep, and loose gravel and ice make it slippery. Wind can be strong on the summit even when it is calm below. Bring layers and suitable footwear, and in winter traction aids. Check the forecast and SafeTravel.is before going, and call 112 in an emergency.
