The Skalli hike is a long day out from Landmannalaugar in Iceland's southern highlands, climbing to a summit with views over the whole region. The loop is 16 km and takes 4.5–6 hours, with 550 m of total ascent and a high point of 1,000 m. It is rated challenging, mainly for its length and exposure to weather. Start early.
From the hut area the route heads south and south-east into the rhyolite mountains, over lava, scree and colourful slopes, and climbs to the top of Skalli. From there you look over the Landmannalaugar peaks and, on clear days, toward Mýrdalsjökull and other distant ice caps. It is far quieter than the short loops near the hut, and you need a full day, good fitness and a decent forecast.
Highlights
- Panoramic summit views over the Landmannalaugar mountains
- Rhyolite slopes in red, orange, green and grey
- Steaming vents and lava fields along the way
- Quieter trail than the popular short loops
The route
From Landmannalaugar into the mountains
The trail leaves the hut area and climbs into the rhyolite hills, passing over lava and colourful scree slopes. The first part is varied and steady, with occasional steeper sections. In fog, follow the markers closely, as the terrain can be confusing.
Summit of Skalli
The final climb reaches the top of Skalli at 1,000 m. This is the most exposed part of the hike, with strong winds possible even in summer. From the summit, the whole Landmannalaugar area spreads out below, with distant glaciers on clear days. The loop then descends to the Stórihver geothermal area and returns to Landmannalaugar along the Laugavegur.
Getting to the trailhead
Landmannalaugar is reached on highland roads F208 or F225, which require a 4x4 and are open only in summer. The final approach to the hut involves a river ford; many park before it and walk across the footbridge. Summer highland buses also run from Reykjavík. Check road.is for current conditions.
Where to stay
Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ) runs the hut and campsite at Landmannalaugar. Book hut bunks well in advance; the campsite is more flexible but exposed to wind. Other accommodation is limited to highland lodges a drive away.
Best time to hike
The hike is possible in July, August and September, when highland roads are open. July and August are most reliable. Snowfields can linger on higher ground in early July, and September brings colder weather and a risk of early snow.
Safety
This is a long, exposed highland hike. Start early, carry waterproofs, warm layers, food and water, and turn back if weather deteriorates. Fog can make route-finding difficult; follow the markers and carry a map or GPS track. Stay away from geothermal ground off the path. Check vedur.is and SafeTravel.is, leave a travel plan, and call 112 in an emergency.
